Good Insurance Isn't Cheap, Cheap Insurance Isn't Good

Good Insurance Isn't Cheap, Cheap Insurance Isn't Good

Everyone has asked themselves at one time or another "how can I get cheap car insurance?" or "who has the cheapest auto insurance?"  We get it - car insurance in Michigan is expensive and it's a hard pill to swallow paying that bill every month!  While there are ways to bring car insurance payments down, it's helpful to remember this: good insurance isn't cheap, cheap insurance isn't good.

Auto insurance rates and prices are based on a number of factors, including vehicle type, driving record, and ZIP code.  There are some things about insurance rates that we can control and there are some things we can't.  For example, you could buy a different car or make sure you are a safe driver who doesn't file claims.  It's harder to control where you live or whether a deer might jump out in front of you and smash into your car. We recommend controlling the things you can control.

As a word of caution, here is now NOT to get cheap car insurance: don't skimp on coverage!  While you may be inclined to lower your coverage to lower your price, this is never a good idea.  Your insurance coverage should adequately protect you and your assets in the event of an accident or claim.  For example, you wouldn't want to drop down to state minimum liability coverage, which is $20,000 per person, $40,000 per accident, just to save a few dollars per month when you have hundreds of thousands of dollars at risk if you were in a lawsuit.  Everything from the equity in your home to your personal assets and even future earnings are at risk in a lawsuit.  Losing any or all of those things could cost you way more than the few dollars you might save by removing coverage, it's simply not worth it.

There are many other examples like the one above where it might seem like decreasing coverage is the way to go, but we promise that it's not.  The pain you will feel from a potential lawsuit is far greater than the temporary relief you might feel from a lower payment.

At Levin Insurance Agency, we prefer to use the word 'inexpensive' instead of 'cheap'.  Cheap implies there is no value and the product you are buying is inferior.  Although auto insurance is generally expensive, we do have carriers that are more inexpensive that others and still offer a great product.  As an independent insurance agent, we represent several carriers to help find you the right policy.  We would never skimp on coverage just to lower your price. Our highly-trained and experienced insurance professionals can help you find a policy with the right coverage at the right price.  Give us a call at (248) 531-8300 and we will help you find the policy that's right for you.
