Why You Shouldn’t Shop for New Insurance All the Time (and Why We Don’t Automatically Do it for You Either)

Recently, a customer called our office asking why we hadn’t called him with a lower insurance rate.  We were surprised at this question so we asked the customer why he thought that would happen.  It turns out he misunderstood some things we told him about our agency and the services we provide, so we cleared the air with him and want to make sure all of our customers are on the same page.

We tell all of our prospects and customers that we are an independent insurance agent and this means we represent several carriers to help find people the right policy.  When you are looking to make a change to our agency, your policies will be quoted with multiple carriers so we can find you the best coverage at the best price.  We do an annual insurance review for all of our customers to make sure their needs haven’t changed.  If a customer requests that we look at other carriers, or if another carrier has made changes to their products that might benefit our customer, we will gladly run a new quote.

With all of that being said, we don’t regularly requote all of our customers, for several reasons.  First, it is not a great idea to switch insurance companies on a regular basis.  One big discount insurance carriers offer is a longevity discount.  The longer you are with a carrier, the better your rates tend to be.  If you are constantly switching carriers, you never get the opportunity to build up those discounts.  Second, programs like vanishing deductibles and accident forgiveness take time to establish, usually three or five years.  If you want to take advantage of benefits like those, you have to stick with the same carrier.

Now, to be sure, if a customer ever wants us to run quotes for them, we are happy to do so, all they have to do is ask!  One of the best parts about being an independent agent is our ability to access different carriers to solve different problems and provide different rates as needs arise.  We are also actively adding new carriers, so new opportunities for improvement arise on a regular basis.
